Support for IPv6 in Analytics

Overview

As part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing the accuracy of analytics tracking, we are pleased to announce that the Klevu Product Discovery Suite now supports IPv6 in addition to IPv4. This improvement ensures more reliable conversion tracking and better representation of data across different network environments.

Why IPv6 Support Matters

Historically, Klevu has relied on IPv4 for tracking analytics. However, with the growing adoption of IPv6, it has become increasingly important to account for both IP versions. A common challenge arises when a click event is recorded using an IPv4 address, while the associated checkout event uses an IPv6 address, or vice-versa. This discrepancy can lead to inaccuracies in conversion tracking reports, as the events cannot be directly correlated due to the difference in IP versions.

This situation becomes more complex when a shopper has both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses assigned to them, and their browser selects one of the IP versions at random. This randomness can result in occasional mismatches between the recorded click and checkout events, potentially leading to underreporting of conversions attributable to Klevu.

How We Address This

To address this challenge, we now support both IPv6 and IPv4 for tracking customer IP addresses. By making use of both IP versions, we can more accurately attribute conversions, regardless of which IP version is used during the shopping journey.

Since there is no direct method to convert an IPv4 address to an IPv6 address (or vice versa), we retrieve and utilize both IP versions where available. Our system automatically selects the valid data to ensure that your analytics reports remain as accurate as possible.

Please note that both IPv4 and IPv6 address are always encrypted in a manner that ensures they cannot be reversed, effectively anonymizing them for tracking and conversion attribution purposes.

Potential Impact

In some cases, you might encounter a failure to track data under IPv6 if the respective internet service provider does not offer IPv6 connectivity. As a result, on the storefront you may notice the following error message in your browser console:

POST https://ipv6check.ksearchnet.com/ net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED

Please note that this error has no impact on the functionality of Klevu Product Discovery Suite. The platform will continue to operate seamlessly, and we remain committed to providing the most accurate and reliable analytics data possible.

The addition of IPv6 support is a crucial enhancement in our ongoing efforts to refine analytics tracking within the Klevu Product Discovery Suite. As always, we are dedicated to providing the best possible service, and we believe this update will contribute to more precise reporting and better data-driven decision-making for your business.
